Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!
Also, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Halloween’s by far my favorite day of the year (which doesn’t even have anything to do with that small fact that it’s also my birthday…) and even though I’m working today, I’m planning on spending a cozy Halloween night in front of my tv with lots of candy and a Stranger Things binge-watch session. (#heaven).
But of course I also love the Halloween related blog topics during the Halloween season (yes, it’s a season). Today’s topic is a Halloween freebie and I decided to bring back one of my old faves: supernatural creatures, or creatures of the night! (inspired by the Creatures of the Night book tag by Katytastic)
To be fair, I’m a bit behind on books featuring supernatural creatures lately, but just making this list has got me in the mood again. So please, give me all your recommendations for great books featuring some of those creatures of the night!
In the meantime, here are some of mine:
VAMPIRE:
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Have I mentioned how much I love this book already on my blog? A few times? Ok, well here’s one more: I LOVE THIS BOOK. But what I love most in this book, is Baz. Baz the vampire. He’s snarky and funny and so intelligent and he beats all other vampires for the title of my favorite vampire.
“How often do you have to drink?”
“Every night, to feel good. Every few nights, to stay sane.”
“Have you ever bitten anyone?”
“No. I’m not a murderer.”
“Does it have to be fatal every time? The biting? Couldn’t you just drink some of a person’s blood, then walk away?”
“I can’t believe you’re asking me this, Snow. You, who can’t walk away from half a sandwich.”
WEREWOLF:
The Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong
Sure, the more obvious choice would be Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. And they are some amazing werewolfs and ALMOST made it to my number one spot. But I can’t help but like The Darkest Powers just a bit more. I’m not naming the werewolf in them, because it’s kind of a spoiler, but I can say that I loved his grumpy but caring personality so, so much.
“So I was right, wasn’t I? It’s still you even in wolf form.”
He grunted.
“No sudden urges to go kill something?”
He rolled his eyes.
“Hey, you’re the one who was worried.” I paused. “And I don’t smell like dinner, right?”
I got a real good look for that one.
“Just covering my bases.”
ZOMBIE:
Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion
I’m not a big Zombie fan, but I did LOVE Warm Bodies and the lovely R. And I must say that while I loved the book, I also absolutely adored the movie. Nicholas Hoult is amazing and really brought the character of R to life (no pun intended).
“I am Dead, but it’s not so bad. I’ve learned to live with it.”
GHOST:
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
Anna may have become my most favorite ghost ever. The contradiction between her two ‘personalities’: the brutal, murderous goddess of death and the sweet, innocent girl are so intriguing and make her a force to be reckoned with.
“I peek over the back of the couch and there she is, my goddess of death, her hair snaking out in a great black cloud, her teeth grinding hard enough to make living gums bleed.”
WITCH/WARLOCK:
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Goig with the obvious pick for this one. Honestly, Magnus Bane may come a close second, but no-one will ever beat the witches and wizards from the world of Harry Potter.
“Curious indeed how these things happen. The wand chooses the wizard, remember…I think we must expect great things from you, Mr. Potter… After all, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did great things — terrible, yes, but great.”
FAIRY/FAE:
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
This entire series counts actually, but A Court of Mist and Fury is where my favorite fae characters really shine. I love them all and there’s no way I can choose a favorite… just kidding, Rhys is definitely my favorite (even if I do love the entire Inner Circle).
“The Court of Dreams.
The people who knew that there was a price, and one worth paying, for that dream. The bastard- born warriors, the Illyrian half breed, the monster trapped in a beautiful body, the dreamer born into a court of nightmares…And the huntress with an artist’s soul.”
DEMON:
The Shadowhunter books by Cassandra Clare
I picked this series for the demons, but it could have been a favorite for almost every other creature of the night. It all starts with The Mortal Instruments, but honestly I love the Infernal Devices and Lady Midnight so much more.
“Demon pox. There’s always demon pox.”
ANGEL:
Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor
This series is so beautifully written and original and features some of the most intriguing angels ever! If you have not read it yet, I highly recommend it!
“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.
It did not end well.”
ALIENS:
Animorphs series by Katherine Applegate
This is one of the series that made me fall in love with reading. I loved the Animorphs series. It gave me my first bookish encounter with aliens and to this day they are some of my most loved and hated ones.
“Give me liberty or give me death.’ A human named Patrick Henry said that. I wonder if the Yeerks knew before they came to conquer Earth that humans said things like that. I wonder if the Yeerks knew what they were getting into.”
SUPERPOWERED HUMAN:
The Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi
I love me some superpowered human stories, so this was a difficult one. But I decided to go with the Shatter Me series, because I love the unique writing style and the amazing character development the main character Juliette goes through.
“I have a heart, says science, but I am a monster, says society.”
Oh my! You have Warm Bodies on here. Literally just made my day! I LOVED that book although it’s nothing like what I usually read. I must re-read this one of these days. Been way too long.
Yay! It’s definitely not one of my usual genres either but I still ended up loving it. Hope to read the sequel soon 🙂
I am planning on reading Warm Bodies for Halloween and then watch the movie. I think that Nicholas Hoult is very talented and I can`t wait to see him play the sarcastic zombie.
I love the Warm Bodies movie! (Want to rewatch soon) Hope you loved it and Nicholas Hoult 😉
Happy birthday! Halloween is not my birthday, but tomorrow is. I love it, too!

Thanks so much! And happy (belated) birthday to you too!
Yes, Warm Bodies was a very good story. I never would have thought to combine zombies with the romance genre, but it worked well.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Definitely! It’s such a unique story and it works so well 🙂
Love your list topic!!! You’ve made me want to read Warm Bodies!! I can only read/watch a few zombie books/shows/movies a year because NIGHTMARES, but I think I can handle Warm Bodies!! Also, YES to Animorphs!! Katherine Applegate was my GIRL in the 90’s!!
PS– I’m also doing a Stranger Things binge tonight 🙂
Oh, I hope you’ll enjoy Warm Bodies! I’m a big scaredy cat when it comes to zombie movies myself, but I could easily handle Warm Bodies so I hope you’ll enjoy it as well. And yay Animorphs 🙂
PS: I hope your Stranger Things binge-watch went great! I actually ended up falling asleep at 9 pm because I’m wild like that but I’ll definitely binge later!
Oh Happy Birthday Lindsey. I hope you have a great day!
I really liked The Darkest Powers. I still have to read some other things by Kelley Armstrong though, like the continuation.
Thanks so much Annemieke!
I still need to read the continuation to The Darkest Powers too, though I could also use a Darkest Powers re-read first 🙂
Happy birthday Lindsey 🙂 I didn’t know that Carry On has a vampire! I just purcahse that book today and now I can’t wait to read it.
Great list 🙂

Happy birthday! And much love for The Animorphs…I read sooooo many of those as a middle/high schooler, though I never did finish the series, and Wikipedia makes it seem like it got pretty dark
Thans Gabby! I was the same about Animorphs, I never finished the series, but I read the ending on Wikipedia and… maybe I’ll just leave it as is 🙂
Great list! I love Carry On and Harry Potter. Such good books!

Happy Belated Birthday! Great list too. I think witches and warlocks are my favorites.
