Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s all about what makes me pick up a book. Now I’m pretty easy as I tend to like the same tropes and I can read about them over and over and over again. Here are just a few of the things that make me pick up a book for sure (I did not include dragons, but rest assured, dragons ALWAYS work as well).

Enemies-to-Lovers

the-hating-game-by-sally-thorne Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

I don’t think there’s any trope I love quite as much as the enemies-to-lovers trope. Give me all the hate slowly (keyword: slowly) turning into respect, turning into friendship, turning into love.

Found Family

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas Three Mages and a Margarita by Annette Marie

This trope has got to be a close, verryyy close, second place, because I’m a sucker for the found family trope. Give me all the misfits coming together and discovering they form their own family <3

Penpal Romance

Love, Simon Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum Geekerella by Ashley Poston

There something about penpal romance. I love when two people get to know eachother on paper first, and only later meet up. It’s romantic.

Friendships

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Running With Lions by Julian Winters

WE NEED ALL THE AMAZING PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS PLEASE! If I even hear that a book has great friendships, I’m all over it.

Ace Representation

Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann Radio Silence by Alice Oseman Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Kathryn Ormsbee

As much as I am a sucker for romance, there’s something about asexual representation in books I can’t get enough of either. Too bad there’s not a lot of this yet, but I’m loving all the ones I’ve read so far!

Kdrama vibes

I Believe In A Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo

I love me some kdrama. So when a book blurb  mentions something like ‘for fans of kdrama’, I’m picking up that book so fast!

Slow-Burn Romance

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren red-winter-by-annette-marie Rock by Anyta Sunday

I said I’m a sucker for romance, but most of all I love my romance with a slooow burn. No instalove for me, I want to angst and swoon and I want it to take so long that I am smiling like an idiot when the two leads finally hold hands or something.

Fake Dating

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang Roomies by Christina Lauren To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Ah, another classic trope I can’t get enough of! Give me all the fake dating and then slowly falling in love. Bonus points if the two leads have to share a bed because they’re supposedly dating, I’m not even kidding.

Auto-Buy Authors

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera The Night Realm by Annette Marie

Forget all the above tropes, if one of my favorite authors has a new book coming out, I’m on it.

Recommendations

Noteworthy by Riley Redgate Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

The wonderful thing about being a book blogger is that there are so many recommendations all around. Nothing gets me more excited to pick up a book than seeing someone else rave about it.

  1. I have my auto-buy authors, and so far, they’ve not disappointed me; when their books make me smile and happy, I tend to stick, happily, with my comfort zone. 🙂

Also, I LOVE the penpal romance. It’s so charmingly old-fashioned, and that oftentimes makes me wish we’d return to simpler times. 🙂

    Fun list!!

    1. Exactly why I love the penpal romance so much!

  2. I like a good found family, and enemies-to- lovers has grown on me a lot since I started blogging and reading more genres.

Queens of Geek and Radio Silence were both great!

    1. Queens of Geek and Radio Silence are amazing 🙂

  3. Lindsey! Lookit me still all active and blogging. I feel like this might stick for the rest of the year ??

Ha ha. Now, I totally agree onm the dragons. Funny how Annette Marie manages to fit in most of the most beloved tropes AND the dragons, right? 🙂 #justsaying

Enemies to lovers is also my favourite!!!! And now that you mention it, while I never would have put ‘Found Family’ as a trope it totally is and I love ALL THE BOOKS you mentioned under that one. Obviously.

I’m definitely reading The Raven Boys soon. Promise, okay! 🙂 Gimme great friendships anytime. And I also agree with the ACE rep and who doesn’t love a slow burn romance???

    Awesome list L!!!

    1. Di!! Haha, I hope your good blog ethic rubs off on me 😀
Annette Marie basically writes all my favorites into one series, she combines the best of the best 🙂
Hope you’ll enjoy The Raven Boys!

  4. Great list! I must admit I’m not the biggest fan of enemies-to-lovers, but to be honest I think that’s because I need to read some GOOD enemies-to-lovers stories. I love a slow-burn romance, and often enemies-to-lovers romances are a little too fast-moving for me to believe. I feel like I need to check The Hating Game out, I’ve heard great things!

Also 100% yes to ace representation and books about friendship – even better if an author can combine the two like in The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy.

    1. Yes, enemies-to-lovers definitely needs to be extremely slow-burn! I did really enjoy The Hating Game, hope you will too!
And ahhh Lady’s Guide was amazing indeed, I can’t believe I forgot to mention it!

  5. Enemies-to-lovers, fake dating and slow burn are amaaazing tropes!!

    My TTT post!

    1. They are the best 🙂

  6. Yes yes yes to slow-burn romance, friendships, and found families! I’m a real sucker for those too. I just adore when misfits adopt each other and prove that blood doesn’t always make you a family. It’s amazing.

Great list Lindsey! Hope your April started off well ?

    1. Yes, found family is such an amazing trope! <3

  7. Enemies to lovers is my absolute favorite too <3 And Yes, slowly is key! Enemy insta-love is totally not the same thing! They need to earn each others trust and slowly fall in love <3

    1. Enemy insta-love is definitely a huge no-no! The slower, the better, haha 🙂

  8. I love it when characters meet their found family. That’s such an appealing trope.

    1. It’s one of my faves!

  9. Great categories. You can see what you fan girl ? over. Love enemy to lover, the slow burn and the k-drama vibes. I love anything Asian, also fantasy and mental health. Thanks Lindsey! ❤️❤️

    1. Oh fantasy and mental health are great too!

  10. So with you on found family and genuine friendships! Those make for great books

    1. They are great indeed!

  11. Enemies to lovers is my favourite romance trope (I just wrote about it last month). The slow burning romance is so perfect. It’s a trope that I can never get tired of. Fake relationships also grab my attention. If there’s “fake relationship” on the synopsis, I know I need to have that book. I just love all the hilarious situations the two characters put themselves to hide their fake relationship.

    Happy readings! 😉
    Tânia @MyLovelySecret

    1. Haha yeah, fake relationships are the best, I can’t get enough either 🙂

  12. Found family is a great one. I also love some slow burn romance. I need so many more in my life.

  13. I love ALL of these too! Especially found families, enemies-to-lovers, fake dating, and slow-burn romance. I really want to read To Kill a Kingdom, now that I know it has one of my favorite tropes.

    1. To Kill A Kingdom is an amazing enemies-to-lovers story! It also has some good slow-burn and friendships as well, so hope you’ll enjoy 🙂
