Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Something Different Sunday, in which I talk about, well, something DIFFERENT than books.Ā
Since we’re officially reaching the end of the year, it’s time to bring out the lists, and today I’m listing my 10 favorite songs of 2021 (part one – part two will be focusing specifically on kpop songs).
This week we also had the fun of receiving our Spotify Wrapped, and I always LOVE this so much! Not sure why, but I just love when someone wraps up my (music) tastes, but in a fun list-story-playlist format. I look forward to it months in advance. Though the downside of Spotify Wrapped is that it wraps up a little earlier in 2021 and as such, I always feel like a lot of faves are missing or just didn’t get enough time to reach my top ten. For example, my Wrapped playlist does not contain any Halsey, Bring Me The Horizon or Pvris?
So I’m making my own Wrapped š Here are my (self-selected) 10 favorite songs of 2021!
THE ABSOLUTE FAVORITE:
Against The Current – Weapon
One of my favorite bands released a new album this year and went back to their earlier rock sounds and I LOVE IT! Both the original version of Weapon and the acoustic version have been on repeat on my playlist.
“I see red
My blood is boiling and it shows
When all you are is a weapon
You shoot em down till you end up alone“
All Time Low (ft Pale Waves) – PMA
Though this song is without an official music video, it needed to be featured because wow, was there any other song more relatable to the lockdown times of 2020/2021?
“What are you trying to fix me for?
Maybe Iām broken, but Iām not sure
Am I depressed or am I just bored?
Apathy and irony, postmodern anxiety“
Halsey – I’m Not A Woman, I’m A God
Halsey’s new album was so, so good and honestly I could have featured several songs on here because I loved them all, but I’ll go with the iconic I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God.
“I am not a woman, Iām a god
I am not a martyr, Iām a problem
I am not a legend, Iām a fraud
Keep your heart, cause I already got one“
Olivia Rodrigo – Good 4 U
2021 was the year of Olivia Rodrigo, and while I have to admit I don’t know all of her songs, I did love and adore Good 4 U, which is the perfect angry breakup song.
“Well, good for you, you look happy and healthy
Not me, if you ever cared to ask
Good for you, you’re doing great out there without me, baby
Like a damn sociopath“
The Pretty Reckless – And So It Went
The Pretty Reckless also released a new album in early 2021 and this And So It Went graced my playlist for a long, long time.
“And so it went, the children lost their minds
Begging for forgiveness was such a waste of time”
One Ok Rock – Renegades
Another fave band of mine released a new song this year! Though not a full album, I still loved the song Renegades, which was the main soundtrack song for the live action manga “Rurouni Kenshin: The Final” (I used to loved the anime version so much!)
“For all of the lies and the burden that they put on us
All of the times that they told us to just because
We gotta fight for our rights and the things we love now”
Ed Sheeran – Bad Habits
Another favorite comeback! I also really love the song Shivers, but Bad Habits features vampires in the music video, so win for Bad Habits!
“Every pure intention ends when the good times start
Falling over everything to reach the first times spark
Started under neon lights then it all got dark
I only know how to go too far”
Pvris – Monster
Pvris consistently release amazing songs and Monster is no exception.
“How could you let them turn you into a monster?
Your bridge started to burn when you ran all across it
I guess you never learn ātil you live and you lost it
Live and you lost it”
Bring Me The Horizon – Die4u
Though not a full album this year, my fave alternative metal rockers still released a new song and it is bloody (quite literally if you watch the music video) awesome.
“I keep holding my breath for a miracle
Hoping the hole in my heart would have healed somehow”
Vaultboy – Everything Sucks
This year I finally downloaded TikTok (still a full-time lurker though) and this song has been stuck in my head for weeks. It’s just so fun and uplifting, despite what the title implies. Also love the version with Eric Nam, because well, Eric Nam.
“Everything sucks, just kidding
Everything is great, no really
I haven’t thought about my ex today
(Oh wait, fuck I just did)
But I went outside for the first time
In a few days and it felt nice
And I might try doing exercise (not really)”
Aw, Ed Sheeran. One of my favorites. I think Overpass Graffiti might be my favorite from the new album. Both Bad Habits and Shivers are great, too.
Oh, Overpass Grafitti is indeed such a great song too! The entire album is pretty amazing š
I have to admit, I rarely listen to current music, but I’ve enjoyed a lot of Ed Sheeran’s stuff!
Glad you enjoyed Ed Sheeran’s music! š
I think I was the only person on the planet who didn’t like Olivia Rodrigo’s big hit, Driver’s License, but I did really enjoy Good 4 U and I like Deja Vu.
I liked Driver’s License a lot *at first*, but I also grew really tired of it really quickly. Good 4 U on the other hand is still a favorite all those months later š
That Halsey song is definitely a favourite and Olivia Rodrigo features heavily on my Spotify Wrapped! I love Bad Habits and Shivers, too. I haven’t listened to the Pretty Reckless in *years* but definitely going to check out some of their stuff now!
Yay, glad you also love Halsey, Olivia and Ed š And hope you’ll enjoy the new Pretty Reckless songs š
I’m never caught up with music, unless it’s Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny. So I’m excited to check these out!!!
Genesis @ Whispering Chapters
Taylor Swift is the best, so that’s perfectly fine too š I don’t know Bad Bunny, so I’ll need to check them out!
I need to listen to Halsey’s new album. I did really love Bad Habits – I just love Ed Sheeran in general. I really love Maisie Peters – I’ve been listening to her a lot this year.

Halsey and Ed Sheeran are both so good indeed! I’m new to Maisie Peters, I’ll need to check her out.
I love Good 4 U – and tbh, everything Halsey does including I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God (peak non-binary anthem)
Both such amazing songs!
