Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!
Today’s the yearly post of shame as I take a look at the books I didn’t read in 2021. Because, even though I’ve been exclaiming all year long about how excited I was about these books and included them in my ‘most anticipated reads’ lists and ‘new releases I’m most excited about’ posts… I still didn’t read them. BUT I STILL WANT TO! Life (and other shiny books and also reading slumps) just get in the way sometimes. But all of these are still on my TBR, so tell me, have you read any of these yet and are there any I really should prioritise?
Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales
This is a YA contemporary about a bisexual girl who gives anonymous love advice to her classmates and then gets hired by the hot guy to help him get his ex back. Sounds so good, right?
Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle
A woman inheriting an old house from her great aunt and the gorgeous yet grouchy groundskeeper who has different visions for the property’s future sounds like a match made in bookish romance heaven to me.
Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne
I love The Hating Game so much that any new Sally Thorne is an auto-read. And this story about a retirement home manager who hires a muscular, tattooed man as an assistant to two old women sounds like it could be just as good.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I’m still behind on the Taylor Jenkins Reid train, but I loved both The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six, so I’m super excited about her next book, Malibu Rising. It sounds like a tense read filled with family secrets and I’m here for it.
A Lot Like Adios by Alexis Daria
I loved Alexis Daria’s You Had Me At Hola, so I am of course super excited for her newest release! Plus the author said this new book has fake dating, fanfic, forced proximity, so what more could I really want?
Defy The Night by Brigid Kemmerer
A new fantasy Robin Hood retelling by Brigid Kemmerer with a female “Robin”, a kingdom with a mysterious sickness and a ruthless prince? It just sounds amazing and we will just not mention the fact that I still need to finish her other fantasy series okay?
Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
This book is described by the author herself as “medieval Venom starring a nun and a ghost. It’s about a girl training to be a nun who awakens an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic, and becomes a Joan of Arc type figure as she wields its power to battle the undead.” And I am here just like SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Dark Rise by C.S Pacat
Honestly, I’m not even sure what this is about, but I love C.S. Pacat’s Captive Prince series AND her Fence comics so much that I’m certain I will love this new m/m fantasy as well!
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
An adult rom-com featuring a witch who discovers a bad breakup ritual she did nine years ago might have actually worked, when her ex-boyfriend returns to town and things go haywire. I mean, this already sounds good, but then the author described it as Hocus Pocus, but adult so HI, I’M IN!!!
All The Feels by Olivia Dade
Ever since I read Spoiler Alert, which was a wonderful rom-com, I’ve been highly anticipating Alex and Lauren’s book. And now the cover and blurb are here and I’m even more excited! ADHD rep + Body positivity + Fanfiction + Hate to love = I need it now!
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
I’ve seen this book described as featuring: A secret society of magicians in Edwardian London + part cute/steamy romance, part historical fantasy romp + a librarian/jock pairing + magical houses and all I know is I’M IN!
Tell Me:
Have you read any of these?
Which reads do you think I should prioritise?

Hi Lindsey! I recognize quite a few of these, but none are actually on my TBR! Maybe I should take a look at a few.
Happy TTT!
Elza Reads
Hi Mareli! Hope you’ll find a new read that peeks your interest 🙂
There are definitely a couple of these that I definitely meant to read last year but didn’t add to my list 🙂
My Top Ten
Haha yes this list could have easily been way bigger *oops* 🙂
Great list! I also had All The Feels on my TTT but basically all of these are on my TBR too? Haha, I’m especially keen to check out Vespertine, Defy the Night and A Marvellous Light! 😍 I hope you enjoy these books whenever you get to them!
Thanks! Hope we’ll both enjoy these books when we get to them 🙂
I like the “yet”! That gives a sense of optimism that, yes, we will get around to reading these soon…
Exactly! We’ll definitely get to them all soon(ish) 🙂
I haven’t read A Lot Like Adios yet either.
My post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-2021-releases-i-was-excited-to-read-but-didnt-get-to/
Hope it’ll live up to both our expectations when we get to it 🙂
Defy The Night! I was unexpectedly SO GOOD!
It’s definitely one of my top priorities! Though part of me also wants to wait until the sequel is out so I can binge… I’ll try to resist that part of me 😀
Sometimes I feel like I curse books by putting them in a TTT post about how excited I am by them…
Haha, I definitely know the feeling 😀
A few of those are still on my TBR.
Hope we’ll both love them when we get to them!
🙂
Start with Malibu Rising! So good!!
It definitely is so well-loved, I need to get to it ASAP!
I still need to get to All the Feels, too. I think I’m going to try to get the audio from my library. I adored Malibu Rising, so I would pick that as your first to read off this list.
Thanks, I definitely hope to read Malibu Rising soon (probably also as an audio) 🙂
Vespertine and A Marvellous Light were both on my list this week too!
My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2022/01/18/top-ten-tuesday-351/
Hope we’ll both get to those in 2022 🙂
Hopefully!
I read Perfect on Paper and Second First Impressions last year. I thought they were both okay, not favorites but not horrible either. I think I gave them both a 3.5 out of 5.

Thanks for letting me know!
The Ex Hex was super cute! I have Malibu Rising as well, but my kid took off with it and I haven’t seen it since. LOL
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Haha, hope your kid loves Malibu Rising 🙂
If you loved Evelyn Hugo & Daisy Jones, you’ll enjoy Malibu Rising too! There’s a little bit of crossover with some character names which was fun to see.
Sadly The Ex Hex was disappointing to me, but I hope you do enjoy it more than I did!
My post: https://frayedbooks.wordpress.com/2022/01/18/top-ten-tuesday-2021-releases-i-was-excited-to-read-but-didnt-get-to/
Thanks, I definitely hope to get to Malibu Rising soon! I’ve seen some mixed reviews for The Ex Hex indeed, so it’s not a top priority for me right now.
I really liked Malibu Rising! And I think that seven of these are on my TBR. . I hope you get to them all and LOVE them!
My list is here: https://fiftytwo.blog/2022/01/18/ttt-2021-books-i-didnt-get-to/
Happy TTT!
Lori
Malibu Rising does seem so well-loved, I hope to get to it soon 🙂
I hope you will love Malibu Rising! It was one of my favorites of 2021. I loved the small connection to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. 🙂
Ooh there are connections to Evelyn Hugo? That definitely makes me put it higher on my to-read list 🙂
I hope you enjoy The Ex Hex. It was a fun read, I thought.
Thanks, I hope I’ll enjoy The Ex Hex too, glad to hear you liked it!
I want to read more Taylor Jenkins- Reid…
Same, she’s so well-loved but I’ve only read 2 of her books so far (both of which I loved)
I recently bought Vespertine and Perfect On Paper! Dark Rise is one I meant to get to and missed too.
Hope we’ll both get to them this year 🙂
There are so many on here that I want to read!! Defy the Night, Vespertine, All the Feels. And I just bought Twice Shy. It sounds so good! I hope you get a chance to read them all this year, Lindsey! 🙂
Thanks, hope you’ll enjoy all of those as well!
Malibu Rising was sadly an underwhelming read for me. Hope you’ll have better luck with it. Happy reading! My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/2022-resolutions-and-goals/
Aw I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy Malibu Rising – hopefully it’ll be a better read for me, we’ll see.
I love your bracket addition to the tile. Yes, we all hoep we’ll read our books one day. Hope you’ll get to yours soon. Happy Reading.
And thanks for visiting my TTT this week.
Thanks! Haha yes, I try to stay hopeful when it comes to those giant TBR piles 🙂
I have several of these still on my TBR as well. I did read and enjoy The Ex Hex and Vespertine.
Glad to hear you liked those reads! I hope to get to them this year for sure 🙂
The Ex Hex was cute, but not a favorite of mine. I want to read A Marvelous Light too.
Lauren @ http://www.shootingstarsmag.net
I’ve indeed been seeing some mixed reviews for The Ex Hex – still want to try but it’s not on top of my list. A Marvelous Light is definitely higher 🙂
I have so many of them I wanna read too! Perfect on paper, second first impression, the ex hex & all the feels!!
Hoping we’d both enjoy thoses, happy reading xx
Thanks, hope you’ll enjoy all of those too!
Someday I want to give another of Sarah’s a chance (didn’t 100% love her last rom-com but did find it really interesting) and Alexis’ books ALWAYS catch my eye because of their colorful cover design. 🙂 Thanks for visiting Finding Wonderland, Lindsey. Apprecaite this.
I haven’t read any of Sarah’s books yet, but they do sound interesting. Alexis’s covers are indeed so pretty!
