Hi everyone, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday post! Today’s post is a Halloween freebie and I chose to revamp a post I did twice already, once back in 2017 and once more recently in 2022 (inspired by the Creatures of the Night book tag by Katytastic).
What can I say, I love creatures of the night!
Here we go:
Vampire

The Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent
I read this duet in 2023 and it reignited my love of romantasy that is still going strong until today. So excited for the next installment coming soon!
“Do you want to change this world, little serpent? Then climb your cage until you are so high no one can catch you. Break its bars and make them your weapons. Nothing is sharper. I know because I did it”
Werewolf

The Others series by Anne Bishop
Though I still need to finish this series, I absolutely adore its take on werewolves (and so many other creatures of the night!)
“People who entered the Courtyard without an invitation were just plain crazy! Wolves were big and scary and so fluffy, how could anyone resist hugging one just to feel all that fur?
“Ignore the fluffy,” she muttered. “Remember the part about big and scary.”
Zombie

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen
I really don’t read a lot of zombie books, so I’m keeping my previous answer for this one.
Also, I really need to continue this series!
“I’m an undertaker, or, at least, I have been for the past few months. I salt bodies and wrap them in sailcloth and sing the incantations over them. I build boats for the dead and send them where they need to go. I love what I do, helping souls find rest in the House of the Unknown God, and comforting the living in the process.”
Ghost

Vesselless (The Merciless Realms #1) by Cortney L. Winn
Dagen is a half-ghost, meaning he’s very much dead and a ghost, BUT he can also turn corporeal when he wants. Win-win, right?
“In that case, never kiss a spirit,” he says at the base of my ear. “It might set the bar too high for poor mortal men.”
Witch/Warlock

The Stay a Spell series by Juliette Cross
The Savoie sisters for the win!
“What the hell? I wasn’t even the lovey dovey type, much less the kind to massage a guy’s nasty feet. Hell no, Spirit! You can take that vision right back and shove it up your ethereal ass.”
Fairy/Fae

Quicksilver (Fae & Alchemy #1) by Callie Hart
I had a few issues with this book BUT the lore of the fae wasn’t one of them. I loved this unique take on fae and am looking forward to finding out more.
“I had known Death’s voice to be a howling hot wind across the parched desert. A wet, hacking cough in the night. The urgent cry of a starving baby. I had never for one moment imagined his voice might also be the stroke of velvet in the ever-encroaching darkness.”
Demon

The Alex Stern series by Leigh Bardugo
Does this count as a demon? I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think one of these characters can be categorised as a demon, at least partly, right?
“Maybe they were just two killers, cursed to endure each other’s company, two doomed spirits trying to find their way home. Maybe they were monsters who liked the feeling of another monster looking back at them. But enough people had abandoned them both. She wasn’t going to be the next.”
Angel

The Crescent City series by Sarah J. Maas
Angels are honestly not my jam but I do appreciate Hunt Athalar.
“Vengeance incarnate. Wrath’s bruised heart. She would bow for no one. Hunt’s lightning sang at the sight of that beautiful, brutal face.”
Aliens

The Host by Stephenie Meyer
I guess aliens aren’t really my jam either as I had to throw it waaaayyy back for this one, but hey I did really enjoy The Host back then.
“I held you in my hands, Wanderer, and you were beautiful.”
Superpowered human

The Ashen series by Demi Winters
I ADORE this Viking-inspired romantasy – it has a super intriguing mythology and Galdra (the superpowered humans in question)
“A hungry wolf is bound to wage a hard battle. And we, the Galdra, are starving.”

Tell Me:
What are some of your favorite creatures of the night?

I’ve never been a fan of supernatural stories, but I did love the Warm Bodies as well as the Pride + Prejudice + Zombies (zombies) movies, and I confess that the cover art of Megan’s books do also look cool.
Yes I love the take of The Others on any of the creatures. Especially werewolves and vampires
What a great approach! I don’t read anything with creatures but if I were, I’d go for witches and warlocks. They all aren’t bad. Plus I like the covers of The Stay a Spell series.
Vampires are always a good choice!
I like zombies, too, but I can’t read or watch them too close to bedtime without having nightmares. They are strictly for the daylight hours according to my subconscious mind. Ha!
Vampires are and always will be my #1. I used to like zombies until I read Brian Keene… and nope, he scared the daylights out of me. LOL
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is on my TBR list. I’ll be reading it before the year ends.
I just prepared my answers for this tag to go up on Thursday and I had Hart & Mercy for my zombies answer too because I don’t think I’ve ever read anything else zombie related!
Great answers!
Ha damn Lindsey I thought of doing the same
and I love most of the books you featured (the others I haven’t read yet)
This was such a fun idea. I don’t think I’ve read any of these before, but I have definitely heard of almost all of them. Ninth house has been on my TBR for a while now.

A great topic for a Halloween freebie. I’m not sure I could come up with a book for most of these as I don’t read much fantasy or paranormal anymore.

I love how you added so many! I just focused on one, but this would have been so much better. Great job!
I loooooved The Host (and still do). It was such a beautiful story. Wanda and Ian forever!!
Interesting way to approach this week’s topic! I had The Host on my physical shelves but never read it. I’m not sure if I still have it or not.
Perfect theme for Halloween!
Happy TTT!

The Others is one of my favorite series ever!!
Oh I really liked the Crowns of Nyaxia and I’m excited for the next book too!! The Others series is on my tbr and I’ve been wanting to try it for years!
oooo the concept of a half-ghost is not something I’ve heard before and that sounds cool
I enjoy all the wer-animals most, be it wolves or any other animals
Wer-animals are always fun to read about!
